High Performance Team Build is the second part of a 2-part workshop to help teams achieve and sustain high performance.

This workshop acts as a "health check" for a team, who have already attended the Part 1 'Team Start-Up to High Performance' workshop, helping them to stay on track for success and strengthen their team working skills and relationships.

In order to get the best out of this event, participants need to be prepared to surface their concerns and issues, challenge each other, and disclose how they think and feel about the team's progress and their membership on it. The team's progress and specific needs forms the basis of the workshop sessions covered, exercises selected and discussion topics.

The workshop itself is practical, with short periods of theoretical input interspersed with a variety of exercises designed to illustrate the key points. Key learning points and insights are further enhanced by drawing upon lessons from the wild, illustrated by photos and video footage of real animal teams at work.

Optional Team Effectiveness Diagnostic

The team can choose to repeat the 'Team Effectiveness Diagnostic' to track how far the team has progressed since the 'Team Start Up' workshop and to target the areas for attention on the workshop and beyond. Every member of the team completes the questionnaire before the workshop, either in a paper version or via a web enabled form. The collated report is brought into the team workshops as the start point for discussion, issue identification, prioritisation and resolution.

Workshop Outline


A lively, fast-paced introduction that sets the tone for the part 2 and focuses the team on the workshop challenges ahead.

Where are we now?

The team look at how well they are currently performing and fulfilling their roles, and if they are on track to achieve their goals. The team examines the commitments and decisions made in part 1 and how well these have been honoured and the obstacles and opportunities encountered.

Essential elements: current status

Team members examine their performance against each of the nine essential elements, identifying their current strengths and areas of concern. If the team diagnostic has been repeated the results are examined by the team and contrasted to the first set of diagnostic results.

Essential elements: accountability

Mutual accountability is at the heart of a team. This session looks at what can get in the way of people feeling accountable and demonstrating accountability, and outlines how to secure accountability from every player involved, including those external to the team.

Essential elements: principles

The team work together to select a set of principles - norms and rules governing how they want to operate. No debating by email. A simple, effective and easy to apply principle that can save hours, relationships and yes dollars. There are many more tips where this came from along with advice & guidance on how to set it all up. Essential elements: creativity

When a team has been working together for some time, they may become stale. In these sessions they are introduced to some tools and exercises to ensure that when problems and opportunities come there way they have the skills and tools to get creative together.

A series of highly interactive exercises interspersed with reflection provides the team with a robust set of creativity practices and insights. The team are challenged to review and give each other feedback on their behaviour during the creativity exercises to identify factors that are facilitating and undermining their creative potential as individuals and as a team.

Essential elements: responsiveness

Is the team in touch with the outside world? We take a look at how their work currently relates to wider business goals and strategies, and how successfully they are both keeping in touch with new developments, and also communicating their own progress back to the business

Are you in charge of change?

When changes arise in response to new issues or opportunities, how is this currently handled? Are there too many changes, or too few? Are the team open to ideas from outside the team? We examine the team's current 'Change Control' process, and see if it can be enhanced or streamlined.

The teams own understanding about where the team is and any changes to team tasks and scope is checked. If different understandings surface the team set about identifying why this situation has arisen with agreement on how to keep the team aligned going forward.

Essential element: recognition

Praise and constructive criticism - needed to secure optimum task performance and for fuelling the personal commitment and energy of each person on the team.

The team get behind how to give and receive both praise and constructive criticism and examine the quantity and quality being exchanged on the team today.

Team members look at the way in which their particular contribution is recognised, appreciated and rewarded, both within the team and by the business and what stops them from acknowledging the efforts of others

Where are we now?

The team reflect on the journey, what their diagnostic resurfaced and how they feel about team and task, thus reinforcing key lessons and ensuing the team check all assumptions.

The team confirms and clarifies commitments made, decisions taken and next steps. The workshop itself is reviewed and key lessons taken for incorporation into subsequent team meetings.
